Concept

I want to do a sculpture combining the force of wind and human beings. One side of it should be driven by wind while the other side is driven by mechainism. People can rotate the handle and the 2 part comes together would create some interesting moire effects.
When the sculpture rotate, it would have a chance of one divide by 360 that people would be able to see a shape of a whale’s tale in its moire effect.

Exploring Moire+Rotation

Thank you so much for the feedback links and it really helps me think more about the mathematics of Moire effects.

the other videos by Daniel Wurtzel are amazing too (see above vimeo)
I like the idea of combining forces!

Moire effects look good even on the screen, appreciate how you experiment with CAD tools.

Concept and Idea

I want to show a shape of the tail of a whale when the moire effect appears at a specific angle. The shape is interesting to me because it can be a tail of a whale or a growing grass.

Some Progress I got

When the moire effect rotate at the right angle, this shape would appear as a moire effect.

I also experiment about how to make this shape more accurate with grasshopper.

some other shapes

I actually don’t like the radially radiative shape, so I try other ways to design the line patterns.
So I tried this shape.

However, I haven’t find a way to 3d model it very accurately. I like this shape more because when the whale contour is gone, it is still generating some basic moire patterns, which makes the combination of the 2 forces more fluid.

Next Step

I think my next step is to find a way to model it better.
Think of the material to use.
I saw one sculpture at the metro station and I thought maybe the fabrication I need would be similar to this one.
The surface seems to be laser cut. Also, when looking from the right view, the surface is bent a little bit.
I have no idea of what material they use because it is painted with gold painting and what fabrication it used to bend that surface.

Also I need to make sure that one part of it would be rotated when wind comes.
So I need to make sure that the centroid should be at the center of the rotating axis. Also, the surface should be tilted a little bit just like a fan to make it rotate.
