Soft Robotic class
I have taken the class called “soft robotics” taught by Kari Love and found that doing it at home is relaxing to me. That class is really great and funny. I am just sharing some skills I acquired and shows some of my exploration.
Doing silicone casting is interesting. Today’s trial might be a little expensive to do at home.
What I made
Material and cost:
total cost: more than $60
for making the mold for casting
Material | Where to buy | Price | Does ITP have it? |
---|---|---|---|
hotglue | amazon link | $15.99 | ITP has |
white foam board | Can be replaced by cardboard, sulfur-free clay or anything you can think of for making the mold. It has to be sulfur free. |
ITP has | |
cutter | I guess you have them at home | ITP has | |
pen | I guess you have them at home | ITP has |
for silicone casting
Material | Where to buy | Price | Does ITP have it? |
---|---|---|---|
scale | a food scale. If you don’t have that will be fine. | ITP don’t have | |
air pump | anything that can pump air. The one for bycicle also would work but you have to pump gentlely. The one I am using: amazon link |
ITP has | |
smoothon silicone | amazon link | $44.88 | ITP has at soft lab |
cups | I guess you have them at home | ITP has | |
an oven | I guess you have it at home. If you don’t. That is OK. |
ITP has | |
one time gloves | I guess you have it at home. I don’t have. So it’s hard for me to clean my hand. |

How to make it
I apologize for using too much “Then” in the video.
Ending
You can be very creative with silicone and this is just a simple trial I made. I don’t think the foam board is a good choice because it’s edge would not be clear when I cut it. Also it might stick to the silicone and takes me a lot of time to tear it out from the silicone. Hope this tutorial would help!
