What I learned?

I like the process of finding new sound using zoom recorder. Since I was new to New York, I was always on the way of exploring museums. I found 2nd floor of New Museum is really interesting. I liked the video work of Mika Rottenberg.

The sound she recorded is typical, for example, the sound of drop water being spoiled in hot pans, the sound of siberia Tuvan throat singers. the sound of cutting a big column shape of fat like thing. Indeed, it seems to be strange. But what I value most is that she is using the throat singer's voice as her background music and at first, you will never figure out this noise. I didn't noticce the throat because it is so matching with the video. When the scene switched to the singer and her throat suddenly become clear, I am so amazed that no word can tell my feelings.
I like her work and I think she is exploring the nature of the sound, that what can sound bring to us. I used to think that for a new media art, there must be someone creating some background music so that the audience can be brought to a feeling. However, I found that letting installations to make a sound of unique timbre might be what I wanted. So I am really enjoying the process of using zoom recorder to explore the world of sound. My mind is not shaped by the visual sensation. All my sensation of sound has been broadened. I am pushing the boundary of the space I belonged to.

How we work together?

We decided our plan before getting our zoom recorder so that we can record the five senses we need for editing the final cut. In order to come to a decision, we first had a meeting discussing our sound walk experience and what kind of soundwalk do we want to do. At that time, we decided the location, which is critical for soundwalk. We decided to have our soundwalk in stairs. In the next meeting, we 3 both brought our ideas of the "stair soundwalk". Finally, we decided our plan as sense hunting. Lizzy at that time raised the question about whether martin could walk upstairs. I thought it was quite considerate for her to bring out this question.
Then we both record the sound of the senses and shared with each other during the class discussion. Then we discuss about the narrative and Lizzy is responsible for managing the whole writing of narrative. Finally, we tried to make our edition. We both edited the original sound recorded in zoom recorder with Audition. We finally get more than 20 pieces of sounds. We edited our sound in sequence, each of us is working on 1/3 part of Audition using the same file in the same USB.
Generally speaking, this team work is perfect. We are both active and our discussion can always bring out new thoughts. We spend a lot of time discussing and I finally find that it worths. Me, Tianxu and Lizzy became friends and lizzy invited us to join in the Queens Food Market, where I have a taste of fried icecream, squid balls, beef, steamed vermicelli rolls and so on.

What you might do different?

First, I have to be more considerate about the accessibility of our work. Sound is more important than walk in case of soundwalk.
I might be spending more time investigating the world before recording the sound. I like the sound that has a story behind them. I think I should spend more time investigating and recording, rather than editing in Audition. What I like Mika most is her special investigation into China Pearl process in Zhejiang Province. New York is a place with people of stories. The sound that they made should also have a story. Right now, I am new to New York and there are many places that I have never been. People are different and I am also different. It might be interesting to explore the Chinese living zone to investigate.
