Why do wind + moire sculpture?

I am interested in kinetic sculpture this summer and I am digging into some mechanical movements. I want to do something in relationship with kinectics and mechanism. I also love those wind driven sculptures because of its randomness. Last semester I am taking ‘Intangible Interaction’ and have watched a lot of documentary about nature to explore some weather related project concepts. Wind sculpture is just a perfect mixture of my interest.

Concept

I want to do a sculpture combining the force of wind and human beings. One side of it should be driven by wind while the other side is driven by mechainism. People can rotate the handle and the 2 part comes together would create some interesting moire effects.

Exploring Moire+Rotation

I have saw a lot of amazing examples of wind sculpture. Also Aidan, a very kind classmate also shared the 2 sculptures he saw in Storm King and is super inspiring. I want to do a kinectic sculpture combining Moire effect with wind.

I am trying some Moire patterns and many more effect are caused by just walking by. I am trying to figure out if the rotation caused by wind would add some story to moire effect.

Also I am trying to embed some concrete shapes. This is a shape that I found very interesting to me. Everybody knows that it is the feathers of a Peacock. I am trying to add it to my design.

Some Progress I got

This is a video showing some simulation and 3D modeling I done in Rhino to simulate the actual moire effect. But for right now, it is just adding limitations to my moire pattern design.
I am trying to embed some interesting and concrete shapes into the pattern itself and as long as the pattern become complex, the moire effect is just not so interesting. It seems that the examples online showing hexagons and lines are the most appropriate patterns for a moire effect. However, I just don’t want to repeat those patterns that already exsists and wind is a kind of thing with freedom. So I imagine its shape is not so repetative and boring. It is really hard to find a balance between interesting shapes and interesting moire effects.

Some other possibilities

I talked to Danny and he introduce Zoetrope to me. It is just a new field and I am a little bit not sure about how to make it and which way should I dig into.
