Week 10: Prototype in Yard

This is a video of my process of prototyping my piece.

First, I ask someone on TAOBAO to cut a stainless steel version for me. However, at first, he always tell me that something is going wrong and he cannot make it. Because the piece I ask him to cut is small and when lasercutting smaller steel piece, the metal might warp. So he tried several times for me and ask me more money.
I test the effect from the front and from the back. One side is reflective and the other side is matte.
The reflective side looks pretty but with no moire effect.
Then I test the piece by adding some wings to the outside.
I got a another wood piece installed and I saw them rotating in my yard.

difficulties

I think the most difficult thing is to find the centroid of the 2 surface. Therefore, I calculate the centroid in Rhino and also I made a plumb line by attaching something heavy onto a line and hang the surface to see where do the plumb line goes. I remember this method from my high school physic class. As long as I got the centroid installed correctly, I can provide he momentum for rotation.

Also, I find myself always forgeting to but some pieces. Finding components are also hard. I find shopping for components takes me so much time.

a story

I got the bent acrylic by ordering another alibaba service. It did not give me the right angle and also did not give me the right contour. When I ask him why there appears a rounded corner in the final cut thing, he told me that it could be due to the heat of bending acrylic. I find myself to be fooled and don’t want to ask them to bend the acrylic anymore.
